You People

First let me address the elephant in the room. I’m like 6 weeks without a review, what’s my excuse? All I can say is I’ve been busy with the holidays and taking care of an elephant isn’t easy. Seriously, I don’t know how zoos do it. I can’t keep enough peanuts in the house and he hears everything.

Our first review for 2023 is You People, which was written by, produced by, and stars Jonah Hill. I’ll have to recheck the credits, but I’m pretty sure he’s also the lead gaffer and possibly the best boy grip. Don’t fact check that. But it’s great to see Jonah Hill in a comedy again. I’ve always thought he was naturally hilarious. I was worried he may have out grown the “I’m shy…it’s cute” role, but even with long hair and tattoos, he still pulls off the awkward funny guy persona.

The movie revolves around Hill’s character and his love interest getting engaged, while having to get along with the other one’s family members, who have a very specific perspective about the role of race and religion. Although there are some funny scenes, I was a little bothered that the majority of the characters are still so ignorant at an hour and a half in.

In conclusion, this is getting our “wait for streaming” rating. It had some good laughs, we love Jonah Hill, but it definitely felt like a story that’s been told several times before. And full disclosure, I skipped the strip club scene. I was on an airplane and the lady next to me was giving me looks. Honestly, I think she was already upset that I brought my service pet onboard the plane with me. But like I told her, the elephant goes where I go.
