The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Time to level up folks. The new Mario Brothers is out and it’s the best version to be put onto film. The graphics are amazing and the movie has more nods than a dashboard bobblehead.
I was really impressed with the care they took to pay homage to the original games. There are so many little touches that I think fans will appreciate with references ranging from the recent Mario Kart on the Nintendo Switch to the original 8 bit NES game. It reminded me of my childhood, except this time there weren’t any trips to the ER over which of us got to be Mario.
As for the animation, this movie sets a very high bar. The colors are vibrant and bright. Everything is crisp and clear and describing the lighting as “high definition” feels like an understatement.
I did feel like the story was a bit rushed and the characters needed some more development, but nevertheless we’re giving this our “Go to the theater to see” rating. Animation of this quality deserves to be seen on the big screen and it’s a great pick for the whole family to see together. Unless, you and your older brother still aren’t on speaking terms after a bicycle-jousting altercation during the summer of 1994 to determine who got to be player 1.
