John Wick: Chapter 4
If precision choreography and adrenaline fueled gunfights get you emotional, you’ll want to bring the tissues to this one. We all know that action comes in many forms, but this movie proves once again that there is no action like John Wick action!
After the first action sequence on the rooftop of the Osaka Continental (approximately 30 minutes in) I said to the guy next to me (don’t worry, I knew him) “if the movie stopped right now with no further explanation of anything, I will still have considered this money well spent.” Lucky for me there was still another 2 hours and 20 minutes of attention-keeping glorious gunplay, car chases and fight sequences. Oh, there was also a story being told with excellent cinematography.
Chad Stahelski, the director and a stuntman himself, discusses in interviews the idea of “world building” but also going bigger with the action when it comes to a sequel and balancing the two. Any movie with a 4 on the end of it typically has messed up whatever it was that we liked about the series. Yet John Wick 4 pulls it off. You feel like every character has a history and there’s so much more that can be explored.
If you haven’t figured it out by now, you’d be a terrible homicide detective, but we’re giving this our “🍿= Go to the theater to see” rating. We gave careful consideration to revising our rating system just for this film and giving it a “🐉= Watch it in theaters then get a tattoo of it” rating or “👨👩👧👦= See it in theaters then change the names of your kids to characters from the movie” rating. But in the end, we realized changing the names of your kids is expensive so we’ll stick with our normal system and just recommend a theater watch. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go put Wick and Cane to bed.
