The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

I prepared for this viewing like any Nick Cage fan would. I sat in my garage listening to Low Rider not allowing anyone else to talk as I absorbed every word. Unbeknownst to me, I was also absorbing carbon monoxide fumes. Note to self, if your car is running make sure the garage door is open. I was like “man these lyrics are intoxicating!”…but nope…it was just the carbon monoxide.

After having my blood oxygen levels restored to that of a living human, I was ready to start the show, and I must say I really enjoyed it! It was a surprising balance of so many genres within a single film. And the chemistry between Nicholas Cage and Pedro Pascal’s character is truly endearing.

I’m still not sure if I would call this a drama or a comedy, or something else entirely, but I feel like there is something for everyone. There are also beautiful locations, great set pieces and plenty of nods to keep even the most dedicated Nick Cage fan moonstruck.

In the end though, the most delightful part of this film was watching the relationship between our two leads. Instead of Nicholas Cage stealing the Declaration of Independence, he stole our hearts…and that’s not just the carbon monoxide talking. Honest, I’ve made a full recovery and back to doing the things I love, like soaking in the bathtub with my trusty toaster oven within arms reach.

My rating:

💳 = Rent it. It’s worth money, but maybe not theater money.
