The Batman
Remember when you were a kid and a riddle was “what’s black and white and red all over?” Well, in this movie a riddle involves having your face cut off and reapplied with duct tape…ah, the simplicities of childhood. Am I right??
Other than a few scenes that had me checking my ticket stub to make sure I wasn’t watching the latest Saw movie, the movie itself had a different vibe to it that we haven’t seen in other Batman films. Not only were there not nipples on the batsuit (thank God), Matt Reeves (the director/writer) got us back to Batman’s roots of being the world’s greatest detective. Many don’t know this but the “DC” in DC Comics actually stands for Detective Comics. I know what you’re thinking, if the “C” stands for “Comics” wouldn’t that mean it’s called Detective Comics Comics? Just go with it, it’s true.
You’ve also got to salute the cast. I loved Colin Farrell’s Penguin. Jeffrey Wright, Paul Dano, Zoe Kravitz, and Robert Pattinson all did a great job. Yes, Bruce Wayne’s hair constantly dangling over his face bothered me some, but I gave it a pass.
In conclusion, I enjoyed the film. But because of its noire style, I don’t think it necessarily needs to be enjoyed in the theater. When there was action, I enjoyed what they did but there weren’t any “oh snap, did you see that??” moments. Because of this and it’s three hour runtime, I’d say rent it.
Oh, and to answer the question, what’s black and white and red all over? My 6th grade spelling test. Who needs to know how to spell the word “ignorence” anyways??
💳 = Rent it. It’s worth money, but maybe not theater money.
